Wild Ranges
A Wild Range is a pen for wild animals: a forest, a moor, open land. Place an LLS Wild Range (a Pen Volume, 50 m x 50 m to start), or tick Wild Range on any Pen Volume or Pen Spline. Scale it over the land; no fences needed.
- Wild Populations: the species it keeps. Each has a Target (how many animals), Groups Per Day (new groups while it is short: hunted, tamed, died; 0: only the first ones), the ages of the animals it brings and the share of males. The range starts with them and tops them up as game time passes.
- Its animals live off the land (no feeders, no work for your workers), drink at the Water Zones inside it, keep to the range and breed while there is room: each species wants Wild Area Per Animal square meters (Rules > Needs, 2000 by default). They are not counted by Find Pen At and never show in Get Work.
- Add Wild Animal (species, sex, age, range id, place) adds one from code; range -1: a wild animal without a range.
Livestock gone wild (escaped and never brought back) lives by the same habits.
Wild habits (species > Habits > Wild)
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Activity | Diurnal (up by day), Nocturnal (foxes, boars), Crepuscular (deer: dawn and dusk) |
| People Distance | people closer than this make it run, cm. Someone walking slowly only makes it watch them, and can come up to a quarter of it (less as it trusts people) |
| Charge Distance | people closer than this get charged instead (0: never). Adults only |
| Only Males Charge | a bison bull, a stag; else females too (a sow with her young, a she-bear) |
| Group Min / Max | animals per group a Wild Range brings |
| Tameable, Tame Foods | it takes food from a hand (empty: its diet's feeds) |
| Trust Per Offer, Offer Seconds | trust one offer gives; how long it eats before it takes the next |
A charge sends On Animal Charged with the person as Instigator: knock them back, hurt them, as your game likes. The plugin does no damage itself.
Taming
Offer Food (animal, giver, inventory, item) holds out one unit of a Tame Food. The animal comes, eats from the hand and trusts the giver more; it returns the trust (0..1, below 0: not taken). At full trust it is tamed: On Animal Tamed, it follows the giver (Lead Animal), and once let go in a pen it is livestock of that pen. Tame Animal tames one at once (a quest reward, a cheat).
In the demo, sneak up (hold Ctrl) on a wild horse and press E with apples or carrots in the store.
Herding dogs
A herding dog is an animal whose species has Herding Dog ticked and the herder behaviour (Behavior: ST_LLS_Herder, or your own tree with the LLS Herd Flock task); the example Sheepdog has both. Then:
Start Herding (dog, flock, flock pen, goal pen, goal location, handler)
- Flock: the animals to bring; empty: every animal of Flock Pen.
- Goal: a pen with a gate (open it: the dog brings them in through the gate nearest the flock), or with Goal Pen -1 a place, where the dog holds them until Stop Herding. A flock in a fenced pen leaves it first through its gate nearest the goal (open that one too).
- Handler: who the dog follows when the job is done.
The dog collects the strays first, then drives the flock from behind toward the goal. The flock moves as real sheep do (after Strömbom et al. 2014): away from the dog, toward their nearest mates, keeping their room. While herded, the fences of their old pen do not hold them; in the goal pen each animal belongs to it. With nobody near to see it, the job finishes on paper at once.
On Herding Done comes when every job ends, with Amount the animals brought in: Kind Herding Done when they are all in, Herding Stopped when it ended short: Stop Herding, the flock stuck (no headway for the settings' Herding Stall Seconds, 90: a closed gate, a fence in the way), or the dog or the whole flock gone. The animals then stay where they are: in a pen they belong to it, outside every pen they are out.
A loaded save has no herding jobs (they are not saved): send the dog again.
Stop Herding ends a job early (animals let go in a pen join it); Is Herding and Get Herding Dog tell who works; Get Herding Job gives your own herding tasks the flock and where to drive it.
Calling
Call Animals (place, radius, seconds, caller): the animals of the pens within reach come to the caller and wait by them (feeding time, a whistle, a bucket shaken). Wild animals do not come. In the demo: C.
